Aerobin – Insulated Compost Bin & Worm Bin in One

The Aerobin can be used both as a worm bin and as a standard compost bin. It is thermally insulated and equipped with an automatic air supply system.

This large insulated bin also functions as a hot composting system and comes with a free compost thermometer.

The built-in “lung” system means you don’t need to turn the compost when using the Aerobin 200 as a hot composter. When used as a worm bin, it provides the worms with sufficient oxygen.

My Aerobin is not heating up

If your Aerobin (thermal compost bin) does not get warm, there are several common causes and practical solutions. Due to its design, an Aerobin should generate heat on its own. If it doesn’t, something is usually wrong with the compost mix or conditions.

Tips to increase the temperature

1. Imbalance between “green” and “brown” material

A good compost mix consists of:

  • Green material (nitrogen-rich): grass clippings, vegetable waste, coffee grounds

  • Brown material (carbon-rich): dry leaves, cardboard, wood fibers

Solution:

  • Target ratio: 1 part green : 2–3 parts brown

  • Add brown material if the compost is wet or smells

  • Add green material if decomposition is slow or too dry

2. Not enough mass (volume)

Composting becomes thermophilic (hot) only when there is enough volume (at least 60–100 liters).

Solution:

  • Fill the Aerobin to at least 2/3 capacity

  • Avoid adding only small amounts — work in layers or larger batches

3. Too wet or too dry

The compost should feel like a wrung-out sponge.

Solution:

  • Too wet? → Add brown material (cardboard, sawdust)

  • Too dry? → Add water or moist kitchen waste

4. Lack of oxygen

Although the Aerobin has an air system, the material can still become compacted.

Solution:

  • Keep the compost airy (no compacted layers)

  • Add structural material such as prunings, twigs or straw

How to use it

Use as a worm bin or hot composter. Keep compost airy, as moist as a wrung-out sponge, with about 1 part green to 2–3 parts brown. Fill at least two-thirds for heat.
